The gravel path meandered through the garden to the manor house. In its vaulted cellar, wine barrels were stored beside fodder for the horses. Above, the ground floor was shared by the registry office, town hall and primary school. The headmaster, his family, and school servants reached their lodgings up a wide spiral staircase to the first floor. Above them lived the princely forest ranger and his four hunting terriers. For the coachman and gardener, a wooden ladder led high under the shingle roof to a pair of sunlit rooms. From each of these four storeys, a real wooden board lives on in WEINGARTEN.
